How Dio turned a lifelong eye for style, art and community into Montclair’s Quest Emporium
As neighbors on the same Montclair block, I have watched Dio turn The Quest Emporium into far more than a store. It is a gathering place for fashion, art, local creativity, and community.
Step inside The Quest Emporium on North Fullerton Avenue and you quickly realize this is not simply a store. It is part design shop, part gallery, and part invitation to wander, look around, and discover something you did not know you were looking for. That is exactly what owner Diogenes Cabreira da Silva, known as Dio, intended. To Dio, the word “quest” represents trying something new, challenging yourself, discovering the unexpected, and sharing those experiences with others. He created The Quest Emporium as a place where people could step away from the everyday and find a little adventure, creativity, and connection. “The best experiences become the stories you tell later,” he says. In many ways, the store is a collection of the influences, interests, and experiences that have shaped his own story.
Throughout the shop, Dio’s original clothing and accessories sit alongside jewelry, artwork, and pieces created by local artists and makers. His designs often begin with an idea, a feeling, or a particular mood that he wants to turn into something tangible. Inspiration can come from almost anywhere, including photography, music, art, nature, travel, or simply something he is experiencing at that moment.
What earns a place in the shop is equally personal. Dio looks for pieces that feel distinctive and have a personality or story behind them. He does not want the store to feel as though objects were chosen simply to fill the shelves. Everything should have a reason for being there. It might inspire someone, make them smile, help them express themselves, or introduce them to an artist or idea they may not have discovered otherwise. That sense of discovery extends beyond what is for sale. Dio regularly opens the shop to local artists, giving them a place to exhibit their work and connect with the community.
“There are so many incredibly talented people in our community who may not have a traditional gallery or retail space to showcase what they do,” he says.
For Dio, art has a natural way of bringing people together. When someone enters the shop and discovers a new artist, or has the opportunity to meet the person behind a piece they love, the experience becomes about much more than making a purchase. It creates a connection, and that shared sense of creativity is an important part of what he wants The Quest Emporium to represent.
The store is also deeply connected to another part of Dio’s life: running. Dio has completed marathons around the world, an experience that has influenced how he approaches creativity, business, and life. Running has taught him that the biggest goals are rarely accomplished all at once. You have to take them one mile, one step, and sometimes one day at a time. That lesson carries into his creative process. Not every idea works immediately, so he has learned to experiment, adjust, and trust that the right direction will eventually reveal itself. The same is true in business. Challenges and setbacks are inevitable, but you keep moving forward even when the finish line is not yet in sight.
The journey itself matters to Dio. The places discovered, people met, and unexpected moments encountered along the way can be just as meaningful as crossing the finish line. He approaches The Quest Emporium with that same outlook. It is an evolving journey, and he is enjoying discovering what it can become. Perhaps what visitors do not immediately realize is just how personal the shop is to him. From the designs he creates to the artists and makers he chooses to feature, everything reflects something he values. He also wants people to know that they do not have to enter with the intention of buying something.
The Quest Emporium is meant to be a place where you can wander, discover something unexpected, have a conversation, or simply leave feeling inspired. Everyone is on a quest of their own, and Dio hopes his shop offers a place to pause, explore, and perhaps discover something new about yourself along the way. As for Dio’s next quest, he is keeping that open. He wants to collaborate with more artists, create new designs, discover new creative communities, and continue finding ways to bring people together. Personally, he is still seeking new experiences, challenges, places to see, and things to learn.
For Dio, the most exciting part is not knowing exactly where the next quest will lead.
